The Lead: After having the game postponed a day ago due to storms in the area, the Roanoke women's lacrosse team made the trip east to face the University of Lynchburg on Thursday afternoon. The two Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rivals came into the game in a virtual tie for second in the league with one loss apiece. The 25th ranked Hornets would take a 5-3 advantage, but three consecutive RC scores would give the Maroons the lead before a late goal by Lynchburg would send the game into the half in a 6-6 tie. Roanoke would score three times in the first half of the second stanza to take a lead that would hold up as the Maroons picked up the road, ODAC, win, 11-9.  

How it Happened:

  • Lynchburg scored two goals in the first three minutes to take an early advantage.
  • Jenna Kuczo got Roanoke on the board but another Hornet score would put Roanoke in a two goal deficit.
  • Roanoke would tie the score with a Tiernan Connor goal off a feed from Maddie Stopkoski and an unassisted goal by Emerson Foster.
  • The Hornets scored two of the their own to once again take a two score edge.
  • The Maroons would answer with thee scores in a 2:30 stretch. Stopkoski cut the Lynchburg lead to one and then a minute and a half later, Kuczo would find Ellie Armstrong for the equalizer. Foster would give Roanoke their first lead of the afternoon with seven minutes left before the break.
  • A late Lynchburg score would tie it at 6-6 going into the half. Roanoke would enjoy a 12-10 shot advantage during the first 30 minutes of play.
  • The home team would re-take the lead six minutes into the second frame scoring up a player.
  • Kuczo was awarded a free position and promptly tied it up at the 23:21 mark of the second half. Conner added her second goal of the afternoon off a pass from Kyla Popielaski and Lilly Blair would give RC three unanswered goals off an assist by Morgan Saylor.
  • Carly Schoudel made back-to-back saves on free position shots as the Maroons would take their 9-7 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
  • After the Hornets cut it to one, Kuczo scored her third of the game to make it 10-8 with just over five minutes remaining.
  • Foster scored with the Maroons a player down to push the lead to three and despite a late Lynchburg score, the Maroons went on to defeat the national ranked Hornets, 11-9.
  • Kuczo and Foster had a three goals apiece with Connor scoring a pair of goals on just two shots. Schoudel got her sixth win of the season, recording eight saves.
