Emory & Henry Softball Takes Down Maryville, 8-6 & 6-2, Saturday At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & College Softball Team (6-0) pounded out 21 base hits on the afternoon as it earned a sweep over visiting Maryville (Tenn.) College (1-7) Saturday. The Wasps took game one by an 8-6 score and were victorious in the nightcap, 6-2.

Game One – Emory & Henry 8, Maryville 6
Maryville got on the board with four runs in the top of the third. Taylor Campbell and Reid Ballard both had RBI base hits in the frame.

Emory & Henry responded in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-4 lead. Sophomore right fielder Emily Scaggs (Riner, Va.) opened the scoring with a single to right-center while freshman catcher Morgan Silvis (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) and senior third baseman Allyson Steadman (Kingsport, Tenn.) tagged back-to-back home runs.

In the fifth, the Scots and Wasps traded solo home runs with Taylor Campbell scoring for Maryville and senior designated player Alex Braun (Lexington, S.C.) answering for E&H. Scaggs had her second RBI base-knock in the sixth, plating junior second baseman Hailey Mince (Trinity, N.C.) to make the score 8-5. Maryville got a run back in the seventh but it wouldn't be enough as Emory & Henry went on to win, 8-6.

E&H senior Cameron Derr (Denver, N.C.) struck out 15, tying the school record for a regulation game, as she picked up the victory, allowing four earned runs on four hits and five walks. Danielle Abell suffered the loss for the Scots, allowing eight runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 6, Maryville 2
The Scots opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the third. With no outs and a runner on first Amaya Goodloe tripled to left field, plating Morgan Brewer. Goodloe came home on the next at bat thanks to Courtney Deck's groundout to the pitcher.

In the bottom of the frame, the Wasps tied things up at two runs apiece. Junior centerfielder Anna Thomas (Climax, N.C.) drilled a solo home run to center field to get thing started and two batters later, Braun drove in senior first baseman Kendall Varner (Bassett, Va.) with a double down the left field line.

E&H posted two runs in the fifth to go up, 4-2. Varner had a sacrifice fly early in the inning and Silvis drove in a run with a ground ball to shortstop. In the sixth, the Wasps added two runs for the final 6-2 score. Thomas got a sacrifice fly to left, driving in Mince while Braun hit another double to plate junior left fielder Nicole Cox (Cedar Falls, N.C.).

Braun earned the win in the circle, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out 12 while MVC's Kennedy Henry permitted six runs on 10 hits with just one strikeout in the losing effort.

Emory & Henry will remain at home on Sunday when it hosts Meredith College. First pitch in the doubleheader is set for 2:00 p.m.
