Roanoke sweeps #14 Shenandoah

The Lead: The Roanoke baseball team went on the road this Saturday with a trip to Shenandoah to face the #14 Hornets in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) double header. Roanoke got a stellar complete game in the opener as the Maroons defeated Shenandoah, 12-2. In game two, the Maroons scored 10 consecutive runs to erase a 2-0 deficit and down the Hornets for the fourth straight time, 11-5.

Highlights:

  • Home runs by Owen Lawn and Jacob Bonzon would put the Maroons in front. The lead would grow one inning later when a Jonny Wall double sent Will Smith home for a 3-0 advantage.
  • After the Hornets closed the gap, 3-2, Troy Ferrell tripled to right to start the seventh inning. A Smith RBI put the Maroons back up by a pair.
  • Roanoke College would seal the win in the top of the ninth. The Maroons used nine hits and a Shenandoah miscue to score eight runs and complete the 10-run win.
  • Will Turner pitched a complete game, giving up seven hits, two runs, with six punchouts. The win was the third of the season for the right hander.
  • Bonzon was 3-4 with two runs and two RBI, Smith finished 3-5 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Lawn went 2-6 with two runs and two RBI while Jeb Byerley was 2-2 with two runs and two batted in.

Highlights:

  • Shenandoah would race out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the opening inning.
  • In the top of the third, Roanoke would answer. Bonzon singled and scored on a two-run home run by Byerley. Smith walked and stole second before scoring on a PK Cocolis double to left field. After advancing to third, Cocolis scored on a sacrifice fly.
  • With two outs, Binzon drew a walk to start a rally. Byerely walked to put a pair of runners on and a Smith free pass would load the bases. Cocolis drew the fourth straight base on balls to get the Maroons on the board. Wall singled to put RC in front and when Hunter Andrews singled to left, Roanoke was in front, 9-2.
  • The Hornets scored three in the bottom of the fifth but that was all the Roanoke bullpen would allow as the Maroons went on for the sweep, 11-5.
  • The Maroons bullpen pitched seven innings, giving up 10 hits and just two earned runs. Chris Dudley picked up his third win of the season, recording four strikeouts in just two innings of work.
  • Byerley was 2-3 with two runs and two RBI. Andrews drove in three runs and Bonzon scored three times.

Up next: Roanoke makes the trip to Greensboro to face the Pride on Tuesday for a 6:00pm opening pitch.
