Wooster Falls to High-Scoring Shenandoah

Lucy Agurkis, Wooster field hockey WOOSTER, Ohio – Shenandoah University, which boasts one of the top offenses in NCAA Div. III thus far in 2022, continued its run of early-season high-scoring games with a 6-1 win over The College of Wooster field hockey team on Sunday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (1-2) held Shenandoah (4-0) below its season average of seven goals per game, a mark that ranked sixth nationally entering the weekend. Senior Lucy Agurkis' positioning helped keep the Hornets off the scoreboard in the first period. The Fighting Scots' returning All-North Coast Athletic Conference back tallied three defensive saves in the opening stanza, with two coming in the opening 3:21.

Shenandoah's Mairead Mckibbin broke the scoreless tie with a rebound goal in the 17th minute. Wooster tied the game at one when junior Maddie Peek worked her way through Shenandoah's defense and had just enough room to spin around and get a shot off that went into the lower left corner of the cage in the 20th minute.

The Hornets' Claudia Lenahan scored the go-ahead goal in the 25th minute on a stunning backhander from 13 yards out. Shenandoah upped its lead to 4-1 at halftime before tacking on two insurance goals in the third period.

Mckibbin scored three times for Shenandoah, while Farren Winter set the team up with two assists.

First-year Cate Barkdoll (8), first-year Hannah Baldwin (4), and senior Lucy Segal (2) split time in goal and combined for 14 saves.

Next, Wooster's off to Allegheny College (4-1) for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, September 14.
