The Basics

• The Short Story: On a cold and blustery afternoon, the 25^th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team advanced past 23^rd-ranked Washington & Lee in a shootout in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
 
How it Happened
• Both teams had chances throughout regulation and overtime, but neither goalie surrendered and the teams headed to a shootout.
• Sophomore RJ Moore had a great chance in the 19^th minute but his shot from the top of the box just whistled wide. Just three minutes later, W&L had a chance to get the go-ahead goal. Dylan Ritch fired a free kick that seemed destined to slip inside the right post, but a diving Xander LeFevre knocked it away. The Generals would then get three straight corner kicks, but could not capitalize.
• In the first overtime, the Blue Jays had two great chances off a Liam Creedon corner kick, but a pair of saves by Michael Nyc kept the game scoreless.
• The Generals went first in the shootout and LeFevre made the stop on Ritch. Freshman Tim Treinen then converted his shot and the Blue Jays had the advantage after round one.
• Seth Chapman and Creedon each made their shots in round two and Hopkins led 2-1. Oliver Dolberg and senior Cole Rosenbeger also converted their attempts and it was 3-1 Hopkins after three rounds.
• In round four, LeFevre turned away Griffin Coffey's shot and then junior Connor Jacobs buried his to send Hopkins into the second round.
 
What it Means
• Hopkins is now 5-3-1 all-time against Washington & Lee in the first-ever NCAA Tournament meeting between the two.
• The Blue Jays won a postseason shootout for the first time since 2009 – a 5-3 win at Salisbury.
• Hopkins has posted four straight shutouts in NCAA Tournament play.  
 
Inside the Box Score
• LeFevre finished with six saves for the Blue Jays, the most in an NCAA Tournament game since Ravi Gill had six at Christopher Newport on November 13, 2010. It is also his sixth shutout of the season. Michael Nyc made three saves for the Generals.
• Washington & Lee had a 14-13 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in corners.
