Emory & Henry Softball Sweeps Ferrum, 9-1 & 6-5, Tuesday Evening

FERRUM, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (19-10) ran its winning streak to six games on Tuesday as it defeated Ferrum College (10-6) by scores of 9-1 and 6-5.

Game One – Emory & Henry 9, Ferrum 1
E&H got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as senior left fielder Anna Thomas (Climax, N.C.) hit a sacrifice fly and sophomore catcher Morgan Silvis (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) doubled to right-center. Silvis pushed the margin to 3-0 in the third with a sacrifice fly of her own.

In the fourth, senior second baseman Hailey Mince (Trinity, N.C.) drove in a run with a base knock to left and the Wasps extended their lead 5-0 on a single to centerfield by sophomore first baseman Desi Norris (Sims, N.C.) in the fifth.

Emory & Henry pushed its advantage to 6-0 through six as Mince stole home and the Wasps added three more in the seventh, highlighted by a RBI double by Norris and a base hit by Mince.

Ferrum spoiled the shutout in the bottom of the seventh as Morgan McCoy hit a RBI double down the right field line for the final 9-1 margin.

Sophomore Avery Adkins (Goodview, Va.) earned the win, scattering one run on eight hits with four strikeouts. FC's Maggie McCray suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs on five hits and six walks despite striking out seven.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 6, Ferrum 5
After the Wasps opened the game with freshman outfielder Mackenzie Williams (St. Augustine, Fla.) scoring on a wild pitch, the Panthers put four across the plate in the bottom of the first as Kloe Bacon hit a grand slam for a 4-1 lead. A base hit by Lyndsey Sears in the fourth made it a 5-1 lead for Ferrum.

Emory & Henry began its comeback in the fifth when fifth-year third baseman Allyson Steadman (Kingsport, Tenn.) scored on a wild pitch and Mince tallied another RBI single. The Wasps got within one, 5-4, in the sixth on a double by junior right fielder Emily Scaggs (Riner, Va.).

In the top of the seventh, E&H completed the comeback as Thomas drove in a pair with a base hit to right-center and a 6-5 advantage. The Panthers went down in order in the bottom of the frame as the Wasps closed out the sweep.

Adkins grabbed her second win of the day, pitching the final two innings in perfect form with two strikeouts. Ferrum's Sears took the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.

Emory & Henry returns home on Saturday when it welcomes the University of Virginia's College at Wise. First pitch will be at 1:00 p.m.
