Emory & Henry Softball Sweeps Randolph, 6-0 & 14-9, Saturday At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (15-10) picked up a pair of wins over former Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Randolph College (5-10) Saturday afternoon at home. The Wasps blanked the WildCats 6-0 to start the day and earned a come-from-behind 14-9 victory in game two.

Game One – Emory & Henry 6, Randolph 0
After two and a half scoreless innings, Emory & Henry got on the board when freshman centerfielder Mackenzie Williams (St. Augustine, Fla.) plated two runs with a triple to left-center.

In the fourth, the Wasps extended their lead to 4-0 on a solo home run by freshman shortstop Lydia Taylor (Salem, Va.). E&H added three insurance runs in the fifth to make it a 6-0 contest. Two runs scored when senior left fielder Anna Thomas (Climax, N.C.) reached on an error by the second baseman and Taylor drove in another later in the frame.

Emory & Henry sophomore Avery Adkins (Goodview, Va.) earned the shutout, scattering two hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Randolph's Jenna St. John suffered the loss, allowing three runs on two hits in three-plus innings pitched.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 14, Randolph 9
The Wasps and WildCats both scored single runs in the first and third. Taylor hit her second round-tripper of the day to make it a 2-2 ballgame.

In the fourth, Randolph pushed four runs across including one on a single by Lexi Hawkins. E&H answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame with freshman pitcher Olivia Yates (Floyd, Va.) driving in senior second baseman Hailey Mince (Trinity, N.C.) with a double to left-center and scoring on a wild pitch.

The WildCats put three across in the fifth to extend their lead to 9-5. Chloe Persinger drove in one with a double down the right field line and Paige Naples hit a two-run shot to left field.

Emory & Henry answered again in the fifth, going ahead 11-9 for its first lead of the game. Sophomore catcher Morgan Silvis (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) got started with a three-run home run while freshman right fielder Grace Harper (Williamsburg, Va.) and Taylor both had RBI base knocks.

Harper capped the scoring for the Wasps, 14-9, in the bottom of the sixth as she drilled a three-run home run over the left field fence for her first collegiate long ball.

Yates earned the win in relief, allowing two earned runs on four hits in 1.2 innings pitched while Adkins picked up the save, shutting the door in the final two innings of the game. Danielle Shannon suffered the loss, as six of the 10 batters she faced in 1.1 innings of work scored.
