Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Outlasts Randolph-Macon, 72-67, Saturday In ODAC Showdown

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & College Women's Basketball Team (16-3, 10-2 ODAC) earned a key Old Dominion Athletic Conference win on Saturday afternoon, defeating visiting Randolph-Macon College (9-9, 8-5 ODAC) by a 72-67 score. The contest featured seven ties and 18 lead changes with nine points as the largest lead for either team.

The contest also served as the Wasps' annual Alumni Day and included a special ceremony at halftime in which former head coach Joy Scruggs was honored with Head Coach Emerita status from the Emory & Henry Board of Trustees.

How It Happened
- The two squads battled early in the opening period with the Wasps going on a 7-0 run to take a 20-15 lead with 2:10 on the clock. Randolph-Macon went ahead by four points with 1:49 to go before the half, but Emory & Henry put up six in a row for a 38-36 advantage at the break.
- In the third, the squads continued to go shot-for-shot as the Jackets pulled to within one, 55-54, with 10 minutes left to play.
- After RMC scored the first bucket of the fourth, E&H put up 10 in a row to get nine points clear (65-56) with 5:48 remaining. The Yellow Jackets would trim the deficit to two with 29 seconds left but the Wasps made five of their final six free throws down the stretch to come away with the 72-67 win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Senior forward Kara Stafford (Bristol, Tenn.) led all players with 24 points, her third 20-point contest in five games, adding six rebounds while senior forward Sydney McKinney (Big Stone Gap, Va.) had 15 points, six rebounds and five assists.
- Sophomore center Alexis Hoppers (Sparta, N.C.) put up a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards while senior forward Peyton Williams (Saltville, Va.) added five points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

Randolph-Macon Individual Leaders
- Kelly Williams had 17 points and 14 boards for a double-double while Becca Arrington had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists.
- Michal Ross pitched in 12 points while Charlotte Woods had eight points and nine rebounds.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry hit 27-of-65 (41.5%) of its field goals with seven makes from long range. The Wasps made 61.1 percent (11-of-18) of their free throws.
- Randolph-Macon shot just 36 percent (27-of-75) for the game with five triples. The Yellow Jackets went 8-for-11 (72.7%) at the stripe.
- E&H held a 48-42 rebounding advantage but RMC made the most of its offensive rebounds, leading 21-3 on second-chance points.
- The Wasps posted a 38-28 margin on points in the paint and a 15-10 lead on fast-break points.
