Baseball loses road game at Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - The Mary Baldwin baseball team took the trip Tuesday to Hampden-Sydney and lost by a score of 16-8.

The Squirrels took the lead early when they scored a run in the first. Michael Robertson reached on an error and Noah Kessler was hit by a pitch. The two pulled off a double steal with
Robertson scoring on an errant throw by the Tigers' catcher.

The Tigers responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, but the Squirrels scored again in the second inning. Will Earnesty and Blake French each walked and both advanced on a wild pitch. Earnesty scored on a groundout by Kelly Hackley, trimming the Tigers' lead to 3-2.

The Tigers scored another three runs in the bottom of the second to lead 6-2, but the Squirrels fought back with a run in the third. Robertson doubled and Kessler singled to put runners at the corners and Robertson scored on a groundout by Josh Lallo, pulling MBU to within 6-3.

Hampden-Sydney surged ahead 14-3 before MBU tallied five runs in the in the sixth. Landon Lightner walked and Robertson was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Both advanced on a wild pitch and Lightner scored on a groundout by Kessler. Lallo walked and Robertson scored on an error before a base hit by Gavin Rush chased home a run to make it 14-7. Jared Mayhew added a run-scoring single to cap the five-run uprising.

For the Squirrels, Gavin Rush, Jared Mayhew, and Noah Kessler each went 2-for-4 on the day. MBU pitchers Cole Webster, Blake Argenbright, and Hunter Zaun each pitched one scoreless inning out of the bullpen.

MBU will return to action when they travel Friday, April 7 to Buena Vista, Va., to play Southern Virginia at 3:00 p.m.
