UMW Softball Drops Friday Pair to Randolph-Macon

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of games to visiting Randolph-Macon College on Friday afternoon, 7-4 and 3-2, at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 5-5 on the season.

In game one, the Eagles started the scoring in the first, as junior Maggie Mrowka doubled to lead off, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a Bridget Laychak single. The scores stood at 1-0 until the fourth, when the Jackets scored six runs, all unearned.

UMW got one run back in the fifth, as freshman pitcher Caitlyn Burch tripled to center field and scored on a wild pitch. After RMC scored once in the sixth, UMW plated two in the bottom of the frame. Senior Rachel Porchie led off with a single and scored on an Emma Shieda double. Schieda would score on a Grace Drury single.

Mrowka led the Eagles with a single and double. Burch took the loss, allowing no earned runs in seven innings on seven hits and no walks with 10 strikeouts.

In the second game, the Yellow Jackets scored one in the first and two in the third, before the Eagles scored twice in the seventh in a comeback attempt. Schieda walked and moved to second on a groundout before scoring on a Burch double. Caroline Bird followed with an RBI single to plate Burch.

Burch led the Eagles at the plate with the RBI double and run scored. Sophomore Hadlea Valera took the loss, allowing three earned runs in seven innings on nine hits and two walks, with two strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Randolph-Macon at 3:00 for another doubleheader.
