The Basics
Score:
 Roanoke 16 | Averett 3
Records: Maroons 10-4 | Cougars 3-10
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: The Roanoke College baseball team hosted Averett in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon. It was announced earlier this month that the Cougars would be joining the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) in 2022. The Maroons would score nine, first inning, runs to set the tone for a 17 hit outburst leading to a 16-3 victory.

How it Happened:

  • The Cougars scored a run in the top of the first to take the lead.
  • Will Smith walked to open the bottom of the first and advanced when Carter Plunkett was hit by a pitch. Will Merriken doubled to give RC the 2-1 advantage. After a PK Cocolis free pass, Conner Butler singled to add to the lead. Roanoke added two more runs on a Jonny Wall double down the left field line and two more would score on a Plunkett double to deep left center.
  • The bottom of the fourth would see the Maroons add four more to the score board. Jack Marshall walked in advance of a Peter Nichols single to set the table for an RBI single by Luke Estep. Wall plated Nichols ahead of an RBI single by Troy Ferrell. A Josh Dawson SAC fly would make it 13-1.
  • Another RBI by Ferrell in the fifth and one inning later, Jacob Bonzon singled to score Ty Johnson.
  • The Maroons would add one more run in the seventh when Johnson reached on an infield single to score Dawson.
  • Braeden Farrell got the start, going two innings. Colby Roy came in for the third and fourth before Jon Rossi went three innings of no-hit ball to pick up the win.
  • Nichols was a perfect 3-3 with a walk and a run scored. Wall and Ferrell were each 3-5 with Wall driving in three and Ferrell added 2 RBI. In all, the RC offense would combine to go 17-40.

Up Next: The Maroons travel to Ferrum tomorrow for an ODAC matchup slated to start at 7:00pm.
