Emory Men's Basketball Falls to Top-Ranked Randolph-Macon at Great Lakes Invitational

The No. 13 ranked Emory University men's basketball team dropped its first game of the Great Lakes Invitational Friday evening, falling to No. 1 ranked Randolph-Macon College, 88-74. The 2021 version of the GLI is being played at Marietta College in Marietta, OH.

Seniors Matthew Schner and Nick Stuck combined for 43 points while freshman Cale Martens added 12 points off the bench. Schner went for a team-high 26 on 11-for-21 shooting and grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds. Stuck poured in 17 as he shot 6-for-11 and doled out six assists.

Top-ranked Randolph-Macon saw four starters finish in double figures, led by a game-high 32 points from guard Buzz Anthony. David Funderburg posted 18 as he went 8-for-11 from the floor with Miles Mallory and Josh Talbert chipping in with 14 and 12 respectively.

R-MC shot 56.5% as a collective unit and was 7-for-17 from long range. The Eagles also drained seven three pointers, going 7-for-18 from behind the arc, and were 29-for-62 from the floor as they finished with a 46.8 shooting percentage.

The Yellow Jackets raced out to a 12-0 lead through the game's opening 4:33 and were in front by as many as 23 in the first half as they led wire-to-wire. Schner and Stuck helped the team claw back in the second half, combining for 31 of the team's 45 second half points as the Eagles outscored Randolph-Macon 45-42 across the final 20 minutes. Despite the strong second half, the Eagles were unable to cut the deficit to single digits in the second half, only getting as close as 10 points with a made Schner jumper at the 15:27 mark to make it 52-42.

Emory looks to rebound Saturday night as they take on Wasbash College in the second and final game of the Great Lakes Invitational. Tipoff is set for 5:30 PM from Marietta.
