Late offense lifts No. 6 Shenandoah over Blue Jays

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Elizabethtown held sixth-ranked Shenandoah to five hits over the first five innings in Wednesday's non-conference game at Bridgeforth Field, but the unbeaten Hornets found their offense in the late going to defeat the Blue Jays 9-4.

Shenandoah, quite possibly the best team the Jays will see this season, came into the midweek affair 7-0 on the season, but other than Dan Cameron's third inning RBI single, Elizabethtown's committee of pitchers did a solid job of limiting the hosts' opportunities early.

Sophomore Mike Garvey took the ball initially, going three innings and giving up one run on four hits. Jared Witner followed with two scoreless innings, striking out one.

The Blue Jays (2-1) entered the top of the sixth with just two hits against Hornets' starter Robert Klinchock, but left fielder Mike Christy punched a two-out single back up the middle and Nick Lorenz smacked a double to the gap in right to quickly tie the game at one.

It didn't take long for Shenandoah to respond, however.

In the bottom of the inning, the Hornets retook the lead on a double steal by Luke Nussman and Dylan Stouffer. Stouffer would eventually score on a balk to make it 3-1. Elizabethtown got a run back in the seventh when Kyle Fackler scored on a wild pitch, but a dangerous Shenandoah lineup struck for sixth runs between the seventh and eighth innings to open 9-2 lead.

Nussman's only hit of the afternoon was a big one. The first baseman drove home Jake Loew and Nick Goode on a double in the seventh and later scored on Christian Rice's RBI double. Loew added a 3-run homer, his fourth of the year, in the eighth.

E-town pulled back two runs in the ninth with Fackler bringing in Anthony Knight and eventually scoring on an error.

Christy went 2 for 3 with a double, walk and run scored for the Blue Jays. Elizabethtown finished with eight hits.

Fackler scored a pair of runs to move into a tie for seventh-place among Elizabethtown's career runs leaders with 123. He also drew a pair of walks, Nos. 67 and 68 of his career, to pull ahead of Kyle Gable for 10th all-time.

Braden Stinar suffered the loss after Shenandoah's (8-0) sixth-inning runs went against him (one earned). Andrew Brndjar made his collegiate debut with 0.2 innings pitched and Nate Baxter got the Jays' final five outs.

Klinchock gave the Hornets 6.2 innings of five-hit, two-run ball. He walked four and struck out four. Tyler Hott collected his third save of the season by going the final 2.1 innings. Second baseman Tristan Baker, hitting out of the leadoff spot, went 3 for 4, scored twice and walked once for SU. Loew and Goode also had two hits each.

Elizabethtown will start play at the Florida Coast Spring Training Games in Fort Pierce, Florida, on Sunday, March 5, with a twinbill against La Roche. Game one is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
