Danville, Va. - Averett University fought back from being down 19-0, but ultimately lost to McDaniel College 28-22 in the Grant Center on Saturday night.

Three Cougars won by fall, accounting for 18 out of Averett's 22 points. At 133 pounds, junior Kyle Sanders dominated his opponent, pinning Romeo Tsai within the first minute of the match. The next match, sophomore Hunter Campbell pinned his opponent at 141 pounds in the second minute of the match, earning the Cougars an additional six points. In the 157-pound weight class, sophomore Jesse Alvarado won by fall in the third minute of the match against William Riley Jr.

At 165 pounds, sophomore Anthony Taylor lost by technical fall versus Alexander LaVeck.

Junior Jovante' Hobbs was defeated by Michael Bromley at 174 pounds by technical fall in the sixth minute.

At 184 pounds, freshman Nate Mallery had a strong showing early in the match, but lost to Dalton Pearl by a 9-4 decision.

Redshirt senior Billy Baldwin lost by fall at the 4:30 mark to Jaedyn Harris in the 197-pound weight class.

Junior Jamar Christian started off hot at 285 pounds, controlling the tempo the entire match. He won by a 11-3 major decision over Ezekiel Gayle.

In the 125-pound weight class, sophomore Daniel Porter had a strong showing late in the match to cut his opponent's lead but ultimately lost to Alex DuFourto by a 7-6 decision.

Senior Hai Siu lost by fall to Thoman Monn in the 149-pound weight class at the 4:45 mark of the match.

Averett is back in action on Sunday when they host the Cougar Open at 9 a.m. in the Grant Center.
