Emory & Henry Softball Splits With No. 11 Transylvania and No. 4 Christopher Newport Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & College Softball Team (9-1) split its pair of games on Saturday at home. The Wasps defeated No. 11 Transylvania University (8-1) by a 6-5 score before falling to No. 4 Christopher Newport University (12-4), 4-1. In the third game of the day, Transy beat CNU, 15-7, in five innings.

Game One – Emory & Henry 6, No. 11 Transylvania 5
Transylvania got on the board in the top of the second on a fielder's choice bunt by Kadi Weaver. E&H answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame as freshman centerfielder Kenzie Ingo (Wytheville, Va.) drilled a solo home run to right-center and senior designated player Alex Braun (Lexington, S.C.) ripped a three-run shot to left.

The Pioneers closed the gap to 4-2 in the third and added three in the fourth to go ahead, 5-4. Lexi Childers highlighted the fourth inning with a two-run single to left-center.

The Wasps responded with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth as Braun and freshman catcher Megan Silvis (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) both scored on a throwing error by the shortstop. Emory & Henry's defense remained strong for the final three innings as the 6-5 margin held for the final score.

Senior pitcher Cameron Derr (Denver, N.C.) grabbed the complete-game win, allowing four earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. Transy's Kameron Bowling took the loss, permitting six runs on eight hits with nine walks and three strikeouts.

Game Two – No. 4 Christopher Newport 4, Emory & Henry 1
After three scoreless innings, the Captains struck in the fourth as Jules Donnelly hit a two-out three-run home run to left. In the bottom of the frame, sophomore right fielder Emily Scaggs (Riner, Va.) plated senior third baseman Allyson Steadman (Kingsport, Tenn.) with a singled down the right field line to make the score 3-1.

CNU got the run back in the top of the fifth when Maddie Hool plated Sarah Proctor from third with a groundout to second base. The Wasps got base runners in the fourth, fifth and seventh frames but were unable to manufacture any additional runs as the Captains took the contest, 4-1.

Gracie Vallejos got the win for Christopher Newport, striking out 10 as she allowed one run on seven hits. Braun suffered her first loss of the season, allowing four runs on five hits despite still sitting down 10 batters.

Up Next
Emory & Henry will play another split doubleheader with Transy and CNU on Sunday. The Wasps start the day at 12:30 p.m. against the Pioneers and round out the weekend's action against the Captains at 3:00 p.m. Transylvania and Christopher Newport will face off again at 10:00 a.m.
