Roanoke rallies for 18-14 win over RMC

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 18 | Randolph-Macon 14
Records: Maroons 9-4 / 5-1 ODAC | Yellow Jackets 6-5 / 2-2 ODAC
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: The Roanoke men's lacrosse team looked to continue their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) winning ways when they welcomed Randolph-Macon to Kerr Stadium. The Maroons led by one after the first quarter but it would be the Yellow Jackets with a 9-8 lead at the break. Randolph-Macon built a three-goal edge heading into the fourth quarter. Roanoke scored three straight to start the final period and the game would be tied at 13-13 heading into the final 10-minutes of play. Roanoke closed out the Jackets with a 5-1 run to take the ODAC win, 18-14.

How it Happened:

  • Wyatt Whitlow and Luca Docking scored 30-seconds apart to stake Roanoke to an early 2-0 lead. After a Randolph-Macon score, Docking scored a second goal and set up George Gilbert for a 4-1 advantage. Docking completed his hat-trick in the first period but a pair of Yellow Jacket goals would make it 5-4 after 15-minutes of play.
  •  Gilbert pushed the lead back to a pair of scores off an assist by Luke Kammerman. With the score tied, Ethan Caldwell would break the tie but three consecutive tallies by the visitors put RMC up late. With 12-seconds left before the half, Aidan Sullivan picked up a face off and went all the way to make it a 9-8 game with a score in the closing seconds.
  • Gilbert and Whitlow scored in a third quarter that would see RMC take a 13-10 lead into the final 15-minutes.
  • Kammerman found Gilbert to start a Roanoke onslaught during the final quarter. Kammerman scored to get to 13-12 before Docking tied it at 13-13 off a feed from Trevor Stocks. Stocks got into the scoring column ahead of two more Docking goals and when Whitlow scored his third of the afternoon, Roanoke had started the period with a 7-0 surge that put the game away. In the final seconds, Caldwell scored again as Roanoke had rallied to pick up the 18-14, ODAC, win.
  • Docking had six goals and a pair of assists to pace the Roanoke offense. Gilbert scored four times with two helpers with Whitlow adding three goals. John Dias picked up five ground balls and caused four Yellow Jacket turnovers. Taylor Lewis picked up another win in goal, his ninth, registering 12 saves.

Up Next: The Maroons travel to Ferrum on Wednesday for a mid-week matchup with the Panthers. Opening face off is scheduled for 7:30pm.
