The Lead: The 2021 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Volleyball Tournament got under way on Wednesday. The fourth seeded Maroons hosted the #5 Bridgewater Eagles at the Cregger Center. These two teams met back on March 27th when Roanoke came away with the 3-1 victory. Roanoke took a pair of close sets on their way to  2-0 advantage. However, the Eagles would use 24 assisted and two solo blocks to mount a rally to force a fifth set. Bridgewater got off to a quick start and never looked back as the complete the comeback to advance with the 3-2 ODAC win.  

How it Happened:

First Set:

  • Roanoke raced out to a quick start as Linsey Bailey recorded five kills in an 8-2 Maroons run, forcing a Bridgewater timeout.
  • After a kill by Ryanna Clark, RC enjoyed a 24-17 lead. However, the Eagles would score seven straight to tie it up at 24 apiece.
  • Back-to-back kills by Clark and Bailey would give the Marrons a 1-0 lead after one set.

Second Set:

  • Roanoke got off to another good start, this time building a quick 3-0 advantage. Bridgewater answered with seven straight points to force a Maroons timeout.
  • A rally would get the Maroons within one, 11-10, with the set would remaining close and after a Parker Moody kill, RC would lead 21-19.
  • The Eagles would take four of the next six and the set would be tied at 23-23, after another Bridgewater point, the Maroons were forced to take a timeout.
  • Coming out of the stoppage, Bailey would register her 15th kill of the night to tie the score.
  • Roanoke fought off a set point and then another Moody kill gave Roanoke the 26-25 edge leading to the Eagles final timeout. Then Moody would give the Maroons a 2-0 lead with her ninth net winner of the match.

Third Set:

  • The third set would see Bridgewater take a 16-11 advantage, before points by Bailey and Moody would pull Roanoke to within two.
  • The Eagles looked to pull away, but a Roanoke rally would tie the set at 20-20 and Moody would put RC on top with a kill.
  • Clark gave Roanoke the 23-22 lead, but three consecutive eagle points would cut the Roanoke lead in half, 2-1.

Fourth Set:

  • The two ODAC foes would once again go back and forth with each team taking a turn with the lead.
  • An assisted block by Bailey and Moody would see Roanoke with a 22-21 advantage. However, Bridgewater would score two straight to force an RC timeout.
  • Out of the TO, the Eagles would block back-to-back Roanoke attacks to seal the win and force a fifth and decisive set.

Fifth Set:

  • Roanoke scored the first point, but a Bridgewater surge would see the Eagles take a 5-1 advantage.
  • After a Maroon timeout, the visitors would score three more to push their lead to 8-1, forcing the second and final Roanoke timeout.
  • A Clark kill would finally stop the BC run but it was short lived as the Eagles would close out the match with a 15-3, five set win.

Highlights:

  • Bailey finished with 24 kills while Moody added 19 and Clark recorded 15.
  • Olivia Newman handed out 43 of Roanoke's 63 assists. In the back row, Kennedy Clemmer had a team high 25 digs with Katie Finlan adding 16.
  • Logan Pasley served three aces while a quartet of Maroons combined on four blocks.
