ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball dropped a heartbreaking game 63-61 to Lynchburg University on Tuesday afternoon in their home opener.

After a slow shooting start, the Bishops would go on a small 13-3 run to end the first quarter and take a 16-13 lead after the first quarter. The Bishops then posted 21 points in the second quarter to head into the half up by five points, 37-32.

Unfortunately for the Bishops, the Hornets would make a run in the third quarter holding Wesleyan to just 10 points en route to winning the quarter 18-10 to lead 50-47 going into the fourth.

A back and forth fourth quarter saw the Bishops inch ahead 61-58 with 90 seconds to play as they looked to put the game away, but could not hold off the Hornets as UL scored the final 5 points of the game to grab the win.

Wesleyan still had fouls to give late as they tried to stop the clock and force UL to start shooting free throws but this caused the Hornets to run more time off the clock late in the fourth. As Lynchburg missed the second of 2 free throws with 5 seconds remaining, Wesleyan's Areina Harris then got the potential game-winning three-pointer off in time but it fell jsut short.

Wesleyan fell to 2-2 with the loss while Lynchburg improved to 3-1. UL shot 36 percent for the game, but just 10 percent from three-point range while the Bishops also shot 36 percent and 27 percent from three making 6 more threes than the Hornets. However, the difference in the game came at the free-throw line as UL received 12 more attempts then the Bishops making 15 of 17 while Wesleyan attempted just 5 free throws.

NCWC was led by 12 points and 2 steals from senior guard Kayla Johnson while sophomore forward Nadia Simmons posted a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds with 2 steals.

Junior guard Nyesha Best also added 6 assists off the bench while sophomore guard Areina Harris tallied 8 points and an assist. Junior guard Myesha Best also recorded 7 points and 4 rebounds off the bench with senior point guard Keorra Taylor scoring 6 points and assisting on 3 more along with a block.

Junior forward Kayrisma Harrison had a quality game as well finishing with 6 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists.

The Bishop women will next be in action on Saturday when they head north to battle Virginia Wesleyan and Mary Washington at 2:00 pm Saturday and Sunday respectively.
