The Lead: The Maroons traveled to Newport News on Tuesday in the first of three straight days of baseball. Roanoke enjoyed an early lead, 3-2, before Christopher Newport tied the game after four innings of play. The Captains would hold Roanoke scoreless over the final five innings on their way to a 12-3 win.   

Highlights:

  • A pair of unearned runs int eh first inning would see the home team with an early advantage.
  • With one out in the top of the second, Owen Lawn and Jacob Bonzon recorded back-to-back base hits to put runners on base. Tucker Shiavoni sent a shot over the left field wall to put the Maroons in front.
  • CNU scored in the bottom of the fourth and the game was tied at 3-3. The final five innings would see the home team enjoy a 6-1 hit edge while outscoring Roanoke 9-0 for the win.
  • Five different Roanoke batters would register a hit with Shiavoni going 1-2 with a run an d3 RBI. Conner Butler finished 1-4 with a stolen base.
  • Caleb Lingenfelter got the start, going five innings with one earned run, five hits, and three K's. The Roanoke bullpen struggled to keep the game close, giving up nine hits and nine runs over their four innings of work.

Up next: Roanoke welcomes the nation's top ranked team to Haley Toyota Field on Tuesday when Cortland faces off with the Maroons, first pitch is scheduled for 3:00pm.
