Moravian Drops Doubleheader at Hampden-Sydney to Begin 2022 Season

HAMPDEN-SYNDEY, Va. --- The Moravian University baseball squad opened its 2022 season with a non-conference doubleheader at Hampden-Sydney (Va.) College Saturday, falling 12-11 in the opener after rallying to take a lead, and dropping the nightcap, 11-7. 

How It Happened – Game 1

  • The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and Hampden-Sydney added two more runs in the second for a 3-0 edge
  • The Greyhounds broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the third frame with a run to cut the deficit to 3-1. Junior second baseman Chris Pow connected on a two-out double down the left field line, and senior first baseman Brett Moyer drove him in with an RBI double to centerfield
  • The Tigers answered back with four runs in the bottom of the third on a grand slam to extend their advantage to 7-1. During the third inning, Moravian starter senior Eddie Olsen became the 20th pitcher in school history to reach 100 career strikeouts with his final strikeout to end the inning
  • Junior shortstop Mason Fisher connected on his first career home run on the top of the fourth inning with the three-run homer to left field making it a 7-4 lead for Hampden-Sydney
  • Moravian added three more runs in the top of the fifth frame to knot the contest at 7-7. Sophomore left fielder David Olsakowski hit an RBI single while Fisher and Pow followed with RBI singles
  • The Tigers retook the lead, 9-7, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth
  • The Greyhounds plated four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take their first lead of the game at 11-9. Olsakowski ripped a two-RBI single to left field to make it a 9-9 contest while and RBI double down the left field line from sophomore center fielder Matt Madigan gave Moravian the lead. Fisher followed with an RBI single
  • Hampden-Sydney moved right back in front with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the victory in the opener
  • Olsen made the start on the mound and had four strikeouts in four innings of action while junior AJ Gordon tossed an inning, junior Ethan Weber pitched two-thirds of an inning and sophomore Aaron Flyte finished the final third of an inning

How It Happened – Game 2

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 edge in the top of the first inning in the second contest when Pow connected on an RBI single down the left field line
  • The Tigers answered with four runs in the bottom of the first, five more runs in the second frame and two runs in the third inning to move out to an 11-1 advantage
  • Moravian plated a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on a two-RBI infield single from freshman third baseman Jaden Clements in his first collegiate at-bat
  • The Blue and Grey scored four more times in the top of the sixth frame to make it an 11-7 contest. Fisher drove in the first run with an RBI single while Moyer picked up an RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. After Fisher raced across the plate on a wild pitch, sophomore catcher Connor Wengryn hit an RBI single to left center for the final run of the day
  • The contest was called after the sixth inning due to darkness
  • Junior Noah Ingalls made the start on the mound for the Hounds and tossed an inning-plus while Flyte recorded two strikeouts in an inning of work. Senior Kevin Brandt had a pair of strikeouts in two innings while junior Kenny Kunzman saw an inning of action 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 25 hits on the afternoon with 17 in the first contest as the Greyhounds outhit the Tigers, 25-17 including 17-7 in the opener
  • Fisher went 5-for-9 on the day with six RBIs, three runs and his first career homer, and he had four hits and five RBIs in the first contest. Pow was 4-for-7 on the afternoon with three runs and a pair of RBIs while junior catcher Derek Holmes was 4-for-7 with a run. Holmes also threw out a pair of stolen base attempts in the first game
  • Olsakowski was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs while senior outfielder Robert Roman was 2-for-4 with three runs. Moyer added two hits and two RBIs in the doubleheader
  • Madigan added two hits, three runs and an RBI while freshman infielder Ayden Dunbar had one hit and two runs in his first collegiate action in game one as a designated hitter. Clements had one hit and two RBIs while Wengryn had a hit and an RBI
