Men's Tennis Wins Pair To Open Season

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 19 Swarthmore College Men's Tennis opened the 2019 spring season with a pair of wins at home on Saturday in the Mullan Center.

The Garnet began the morning with an 8-1 win over Centennial Conference opponent Muhlenberg College. Swarthmore held off Washington & Lee in the second match of the day 6-3.

Swarthmore 8, Muhlenberg 1

Swarthmore cruised through doubles play with Evan Han and John Lathrop winning the first flight 8-2, Simon Vernier and Kevin Xu claiming second doubles 8-2 and Noah Cheng and Noah Criss taking third doubles 8-1.

In singles action, Cheng led off with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the top flight. Freshman Weiyi Zhu took care of business in second singles 6-3, 6-1. In third singles, junior Kevin Zhu won 6-3 in the first set and then won the tiebreaker game in the second set to take the match.

For the sake of time, the final three singles matches were played as pro sets. Freshman Minki Kim won 8-3 at fourth singles. Max Gruber battled in fifth singles but fell 9-7. In sixth singles, William Teoh ran past his opponent, winning 8-2.

Swarthmore 6, Washington & Lee 3

Swarthmore took a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. Thibault Vernier and Jiung Jung won 8-5 in first doubles while Simon Vernier and Weiyi Zhu claimed third doubles 8-3.

The Garnet won in second, fourth, fifth and sixth singles. Thibault Vernier picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win at second singles and Lathrop wen 6-1, 6-1 in the fourth slot. Criss, a freshman, locked up the match for the Garnet with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in sixth singles. Han's fifth-singles match ended soon after 6-0, 6-2 to give Swarthmore the final match total of 6-3.

Swarthmore returns to action Sunday morning against TCNJ.
