Marlins down Wasps 92-71 in return to action

Box Score LYNCHBURG, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team defeated the Wasps of Emory & Henry College 92-71 in their return to action on Sunday afternoon in a neutral site game at the University of Lynchburg. Five Marlins ended the game with double-digit points led by Tyree Golston with 19. VWU moved to 2-3 on the season and 2-0 in the ODAC standings while E&H falls to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in the ODAC.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with the Wasps getting on the scoreboard first with a three-pointer but the Marlins responded scoring six consecutive points to take a 6-3 lead. E&H closed the gap with a layup but VWU went on to take a five-point lead 10-5 with 16:39. The Wasps made another push climbing within a point, 10-9, as the clock ticked under 16 minutes, but the Marlins put another five points together to lead 15-9 (14:17). Over the next five minutes Emory & Henry rallied again to close the Virginia Wesleyan lead to three points, 23-20, with 9:50 remaining. E&H took over the Marlins nearly three minutes later, 7:01, to lead 27-25 off a three-pointer by Dylan Catron. The Marlins used the last few minutes of the first half to reclaim their lead and went into the break with a one-point advantage, 38-37, following a three pointer from Corey Pelham.

Virginia Wesleyan came out of the break and extended their lead to nine points, 46-37, after Tyree Golston scored all eight points for the Marlins. The Wasps scored on a layup to break up the Marlins rally, however, VWU continued on another 8-0 run to lead 54-39 at the 16:24 mark. E&H responded to the VWU rally with a 8-2 run of their own to close the Marlin lead to nine again with the score sitting at 56-47. Virginia Wesleyan went on a scoring spree sinking three three-pointers to open up an 18-point lead, 67-49. Emory & Henry followed with 12-3 run, again closing the Marlins lead to nine points, 70-61. VWU scored 11 unanswered points to take a 20-point lead, 81-61, with just over five minutes remaining in the game. In the final five minutes the teams traded baskets with the Marlins scoring 11 points and the Wasps 10, putting the final score at 92-71. 

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Tyree Golston with 19 points and three assists. Tim Fisher and Lamont Steward each added 15 points a piece, while Jordan White put up 14 points and Corey Pelham contributed 13. Steward and Pelham each brought down seven rebounds.

EMORY & HENRY LEADERS
The Wasps were led by Robert Holliday Jr. with 22 points and seven rebounds. Malcolm Morgan added 14 points and Kevin Grau Rodriguez joined the double-digit point club with 12.

KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came over a three minute span when the Marlins went on an 11-0 run to open a 20-point lead over the Wasps.

UP NEXT
The Virginia Wesleyan Marlins will return to action on Friday, February 19 when they host the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College in the newly renovated TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 pm and will be broadcasted for fans to watch. A note of importance, no fans are permitted to attend any home game this season per a conference wide policy passed by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Presidents Council.
