The Lead: The Roanoke College baseball team made the trip to Ferrum for a single game with the Panthers on Tuesday night. The game would go back and forth with the score tied, 3-3, heading into the final three innings. The Maroons closed the night on a 5-0 run to pick up the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win, 8-3.    

Highlights:

  • Trailing 1-0, a Will Smith, two out, single would be the base runner that the Maroons needed. PK Cocolis tripled to center field to knot the game at 1-1.
  • In the top of the fifth, Jacob Bonzon reached on an infield single and stole second base to get into scoring position. Mason Staz gave RC the lead with an RBI single down the right field line. Tucker Schiavoni drew a free pass and advanced on a Smith ground out. Cocolis would make it 3-1 with a base hit.
  • The Panthers would respond with a pair of tying runs in the bottom half and the game would go into the late innings in a 3-3 tie.
  • Bonzon singled and Staz walked to start the seventh. A Smith double would plate Bonzon and Staz would score on a Cocolis sacrifice fly to put Roanoke back in front, 5-3.
  • Owen Lawn tripled and would score on a Conner Butler sacrifice fly and Roanoke would take a three-run lead into the final inning.
  • Lawn added an RBI triple and would score on a wild pitch as Roanoke picked up the ODAC win, 8-3.
  • Lawn finished 3-5 with a pair of triples, two runs and an RBI. Cocolis was 2-3 with three RBI with Smith going 2-5 with a run and an RBI. Bonzon went 2-3 with a pair of runs and a stolen base. Chris Dudley was awarded the win when he came into a tie game in the fifth, going two innings giving up just a single hit and recording a strikeout. Austin Bansek, Anthony Sullivan, and Owen Ledford combined for three shutout innings to seal the win.
