The Lead: The Roanoke College field hockey team traveled north for its first contest of the season with a matchup at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg. Despite scoring three goals in the fourth quarter, the Maroons fell 6-3 to the Eagles.

Highlights:

  • UMW scored once in each of the first two quarters to take a 2-0 lead into the half and then doubled its lead with a pair of goals in the third quarter.
  • Josephine van Leyen scored the first goal for the Maroons of the season at the 45:43 mark with Hope Keller adding her own goal less than two minutes later at 47:20.
  • After an Eagles goal, Grace Vernarelli made it a two-goal game at 57:51.
  • UMW put the game out of reach with a goal at 58:15 and held on for the win.
  • Madison Wingerter made eight saves in the 14 shots she faced, playing all 60 minutes in goal for the Maroons.
