#12 UMW Women's Lax Falls at #8 Washington & Lee, 17-10, in Opener

The 12th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped its 2020 season opener at eighth-ranked Washington & Lee University, 17-10, on Sunday afternoon in Lexington, Va.

After W&L scored off the oening draw, the Eagles tied the score with 28:38 on a score from senior Paige Haskins. The Generals then scored twice to grab a 3-1 lead, but two more scores from Haskins knotted the score at 3-3 with 22:39 left in the first half. From there, the hosts took over, scoring six straight goals to close the half and to take a 9-3 lead to halftime.

Another Generals goal to open the second extended their lead to 10-3, before Morgan Shorts netted one goal and Haskins scored her fourth of the day on a free position shot. Washington & Lee tried to pull away with three straight goals to push their margin to 13-5, but two scores from freshman Kayla Sarazin and another from Haskins, on a Sarazin assist, returned the margin to 13-8 with 11:00 left.

Washington & Lee scored four of the final six goals, with Haskins scoring both for UMW to end her banner day with seven goals. Sarazin scored twice with one assist, and Shorts scored once and set up Haskins on four goals.

Washington & Lee led in shots, 29-25, and the Generals led in free position shots, 11-4. UMW led in ground balls, 15-12, and the hosts led in draw controls, 16-12. Eagle goalkeeper Reilly Miller had four saves and Summer Allen added one. Haskins added six draw controls and three ground balls to complete her impressive effort.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they visit the University of Lynchburg at 1:00 p.m.
