Roanoke Earns a Split on Day One

The Lead: Roanoke College kicked off the 2021 season by hosting the, six game, three team, Mountain Mash tournament at the Moyer Complex. The Maroons jumped out to an early lead on the visiting Bulldogs and held on for a 3-2 season opening win over Adrian.

How it Happened:

  • Adrian got the scoring started in the top of the first when a leadoff double put a runner in scoring position. After advancing to third, a ground ball would stake the visitors to a 1-0 lead.
  • Rebecca Hensley led off the bottom half with an infield single in advance of Brooke Trapuzzano being hit by a pitch. Jordyn DiFava bunted to advance the runners. Rachel Sirbaugh plated a pair with a single to center.
  • The Maroons would add a third run after Janae Henry singled and stole second before advancing to third on a ground out. Emma Eccles made it 3-1 with an RBI single.
  • Despite giving up a run in the top of the seventh, RC held on to record the last out and pick up their first win of the season.
  • Jada Karnes went the distance giving up eight hits while recording eight strikeouts. Hensely was a perfect 3-3 with a run scored.

Game 2

Score: Roanoke 3 | Ferrum 8
Records: Maroons 1-1 | Panthers 1-3
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke College played host to Ferrum in their second game of the 2021 Mountain Mash Tournament. The Maroons scored in the first inning but two Ferrum runs in the second and four more in the third propelled the Panthers to an 8-3 win.

How it Happened:

  • Hensley walked and stole second to start the game. After advancing to third on a groundout, Hensley made it 1-0 on a sacrifice fly by DiFava.
  • Three consecutive singles would see Ferrum tie the game and then take the lead on a fielder's choice.
  • One inning later, the Panthers would get a 2-RBI double and SAC fly to add to their lead. In the fourth frame, Ferrum got two more for an 8-1 advantage.
  • Trapuzzano added a 2-RBI single in the fifth to complete the scoring.

Up Next: Roanoke will host the second day of the tournament tomorrow with games at 11:00 and 3:00 against Adrian and Ferrum.
