Women's Basketball falls to Wasps of Emory & Henry 62-57

Box Score LYNCHBURG, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to the Wasps of Emory & Henry College 62-57 on Sunday afternoon. The Marlins and Wasps competed at a neutral site hosted by the University of Lynchburg in Lynchburg, VA.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with the Wasps scoring six points before the Marlins responded with a 10-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Jessica Jennings at the 5:10 mark of the first quarter. The teams traded baskets the remaining five minutes of the quarter and saw the Wasps reclaim the lead to head into the second quarter with a 15-14 advantage.

Virginia Wesleyan responded by taking a one-point lead, 21-20, following a 7-5 run again capped by a Jessica Jennings three-pointer at the 7:38 mark. The basket went cold for the Marlins after that as the Wasps closed the second quarter on a 19-3 rally heading into the break leading 39-24.

Emory & Henry opened the third quarter on a 5-2 run taking a 44-26 lead at the 6:57 mark. A three-pointer by S'Zahria Jones spurred a 13-3 run that pulled the Marlins within eight points of the Wasps as the third quarter came to a close with the score sitting at 47-39. 

The fourth quarter saw the Wasps maintain a ten-point lead for eight minutes of action, 55-45 (2:03), but in the final two minutes the Marlins came alive pulling within three-points, 60-57, on a Jennings three-pointer, with just four seconds to play. A foul by Jennings with one second remaining allowed the Wasps a chance at two more points, which they converted, to end the game with Emory & Henry winning 62-57. 

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Jessica Jennings with 14 points on the day. Freshman Adaje Williams added 12 points as well as 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. S'Zahria Jones also scored 12 points and added seven rebounds while going 7-8 from the free throw line. 

EMORY & HENRY LEADERS
The Wasps were led by Alexis Hoppers with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Brylee Jones added 18 points coming off the bench and Elizabeth Jones put up 10 points as the last Wasp to score double-digits. 

UP NEXT
The Virginia Wesleyan Marlins return to action on Thursday, Feb. 18, when they return home to TowneBank Arena to host the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College. Tip off is set for 7 PM. Per ODAC policies, no fans will be allowed in the game so fans can follow the game here.  VIDEO   |   STATS
