The Basics
Score: Roanoke 21 | Mary Washington 16
Records: Maroons 6-4 / 2-1 ODAC | Eagles 6-5
Location: Fredericksburg, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke stepped out of conference for an in-state matchup with Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles raced out to an early advantage and held an 11-6 edge at the half. The Maroons tied it up at 14-14 heading into the final frame and a 3-0 start to the finale would put Roanoke in front to stay as the Maroons picked up the 21-16 roan win.

How it Happened:

  • Roanoke found themselves in a two-goal hole to start the afternoon but a goal by Trevor Stocks, and a Stocks to Sean Kennedy score would tie the contest. However, the Eagles would find the back of the net six more times to take an 8-4 lead into the second frame.
  • Ethan Caldwell found Luke Kammerman before Kammerman returned the favor to Wyatt Whitlow to get the Maroons back into the game. The momentum would shift back to the home team when Mary Washington finished the half on a 3-0 surge to lead, 11-6 at the break.
  • After falling behind by six, George Gilbert started and finished a five-goal run, sandwiching three scores by Whitlow, that saw RC back to within 11-12. Kammerman assisted on three straight markers to put the Maroons in front for the first time but a late Eagle tally made it 14-14 with 15-minutes left to play.
  • Gilbert, Whitlow, and Stocks went back-to-back to start the fourth as Roanoke had finally seized control of the game. Mary Washington made it close but a 3-0 close to the afternoon would see Roanoke leave Fredericksburg with a 21-16 victory.
  • Whitlow scored six goals and handed out a pair of assists while Gilbert added four scores with Caldwell and Stocks scoring three times each. Kammerman scored twice and handed out seven of the Maroon's 13 assists for the afternoon. Carson Peck picked up six ground balls with Matt Jahries, John Dias, and RT Williamson picking up five loose ball apiece. In goal, Taylor Lewis recorded 13 saves for his sixth win of the 2022 campaign.
