Game 1

Score: Roanoke 11 | Southern Virginia 0
Records: Maroons 5-2 | Knights 3-4
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: The Roanoke College softball team had to wait two days to play host to Southern Virginia as the original date was rained out. The Maroons came out on fire, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first to set the tone for a sweep of the Knights. Roanoke posted a pair of 11-0, five-inning wins to run their early season record to 6-2.

How it Happened:

  • After a 1-2-3 top of the first, Roanoke started the bottom half with a Rebecca Hensley single and stolen base ahead of a Brooke Trapuzzano walk. Another free pass would load the bases and starting pitcher Jada Karnes got the scoring start with an infield single. Rachel Sirbaugh then delivered a three-run double to increase the lead.
  • The Maroons were not done in the first frame when an error put two runners on. Jordyn DiFava singled in a run and Gabby Fox grounded out for another run. Emma Eccles doubled in a pair and when Trapuzzano singled home Eccles, RC had batted around and put eight runs on the board.
  • That was more than enough for Karnes who picked up the win by going four and a third, giving up two hits and striking out six. Meagen Evans recorded the final two outs, both via the strikeout.
  • Karnes, Trapuzzano, and Sirbaugh combined to go 6-6 with six runs and six RBI.
