The Lead: Fifth-seeded Roanoke earned a trip to the Semifinals of the 2020 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament with a 73-66 win over fourth-seed Guilford Friday afternoon at the Salem Civic Center.
How it Happened:
- The game was tied 7-7 five minutes into the game when the Maroons went on 15-2 run, taking a 22-9 lead on an offensive rebound and put back by Ethan Rohan with nine minutes to go in the half.
- Guilford rallied using a 15-4 run to cut the Roanoke lead to 26-24 as Jorden Davis drained a shot with 2:09 to go.
- A three-point play by Kasey Draper with just over a minute to play would send the teams to the locker room with the Maroons leading 29-24.
- A three-pointer by Brandon Harrell and a bucket by Draper gave RC a 10 point lead at 34-24 just over a minute into the second-half.
- The Maroons led 40-33 with 14:45 left in the game when they scored 11 of the next 14 points to take a 51-36 lead on a Efosa Edosomwan basketball with 11 minutes to play.
- An Edosomwan three-pointer gave RC a 64-55 advantage with 4:23 before Guilford scored nine unanswered points, tying the game on two free-throws by Davis.
- Tripp Greene was fouled on a three-point attempt on Roanoke's next possession and he made all three attempts to put RC on top 67-64 with 1:28 to play.
- A defensive stop by the Maroons on the Quakers next possession resulted in a Nick Price fast-break bucket that made it 69-64 with 1:09 on the clock.
- Jordan converted a field goal on the other end of the court to make the score 69-66 before Roanoke turned the ball over giving GC a chance to tie.
- Guilford missed a pair of free-throws on its ensuing possession and Ethan Rohan would grab a key offensive rebound on the Roanoke offensive end of the floor and convert one-of-two free-throws to make it 70-66.
- RC's defensive would get another stop on Guilford's next possession and Edosomwan nailed one-of-two free-throws to extended the lead to five with 11 seconds left.
- Greene finished with 18 points for RC, while Draper and Edosomwan each had 10. Rohan finished with eight points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.
- Davis had a game-high 21 point for GC. The Roanoke defense held Guilford to just 31.4% shooting as the Quakers made 22-of-70 shots from the field, including 7-of-30 from beyond the three-point line.
Up Next: Roanoke will take on the top-seed Randolph-Macon at 6:00 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals at the Salem Civic Center.
