No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan Softball Takes Two From No. 9 Emory & Henry Thursday Afternoon

DANVILLE, Va. – The No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan University Softball Team (29-3-1, 13-1 ODAC) took sole possession of first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference on Thursday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of No. 9 Emory & Henry College (21-5, 11-3 ODAC). The Marlins won the games by scores of 10-0 and 4-1.

Thursday's doubleheader was the resumption of a halted attempt by E&H and VWU to play on Saturday, March 27. The first game was halted in the top of the second inning with the Marlins leading 4-0.

Game One – No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan 10, No. 9 Emory & Henry 0 (five innings)
Virginia Wesleyan extended its lead to 6-0 at the end of the second. Madison Glaubke scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0 while Karlee Fretz plated a run with a single up the middle.

With the bases loaded in the top of the third, Glaubke tripled to right centerfield to clear the bases, pushing the margin to 9-0. Julia Sinnett drove in Glaubke on the next at bat with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to make it a 10-0 lead.

Emory & Henry was only able to get one runner aboard in the bottom of the fifth as senior shortstop Kyndall Hiatt (Ararat, Va.) hit an infield single, but the Wasps were unable to capitalize and the contest ended at the end of the fifth.

VWU's Hanna Hull earned the win, pitching three no-hit innings with four strikeouts. E&H senior Cameron Derr (Denver, N.C.) took the loss, allowing 10 runs on eight hits and six walk while striking out three.

Game Two – No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan 4, No. Emory & Henry 1
Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Danielle Stewart hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Katelyn Biando drove in Sinnett with a single up the middle.

Emory & Henry closed the gap to 2-1 in the fifth when senior pitcher Alex Braun (Lexington, S.C.) doubled to left-centerfield to plate junior designated player Nicole Cox (Cedar Falls, N.C.), who reached base on an infield single.

In the sixth, Sinnett extended the Marlins' lead to 4-1 with a two-run homer to left field. The Wasps got a runner on in the bottom of the sixth when junior centerfielder Anna Thomas (Climax, N.C.) walked but would not get the necessary offense to get any closer.

Hull earned her second win of the day, this time picking up a complete-game victory. She allowed one run on four hits while striking out 15 and walking four. Braun suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Up Next
Emory & Henry will host University of Lynchburg on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., in the ODAC finale for both teams. The contests will also serve as Senior Day for the Wasps.
