  • The Short Story: The Roanoke men's basketball team scored 55 points in the second half for a come from behind win over the Whitworth Pirates 80-86 to finish play at the Mt. Union Tournament in Ohio on Saturday. Marcus Morgan notched the first double-double of his career with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Whitworth scored the first three points of the game, but then the two teams traded shots before Zach Rosenthal made a three with 13:25 left in the first half to tie the score at 9-9. The Maroons would take their first lead of the game at 12:40 on a Kasey Draper layup.
  • After the Pirates retook the lead, Roanoke tied the score once again at 25-25 with 6:42 left on a three by Marcus Morgan. Whitworth went on a 7-0 over the next 2:39 to begin to pull away. However, the Maroons went point-for-point the rest of the half, trailing 41-34 at the break.
  • The two squads picked up where they left off to start the second half by trading points with the Maroons pulling within six on a Draper layup at 18:01. After a three by the Pirates pushed their lead back to nine at 17:44, the Maroons went on an 8-0 run over the next 2:20 to pull within one of Whitworth.
  • Less than 20 seconds later a by Joshua McClary tied the score at 52-52. It again went back and forth until the Maroons pulled ahead 62-59 on a three by McClary at 11:41. It was the last time Roanoke needed to take the lead.
  • Whitworth pulled within one of the Maroons, but Roanoke would also lead by as many as nine at 81-72 on a pair of free throws by Rosenthal. Despite a 14-8 run, the Maroons held strong for the three-point win to close out the tournament., 89-86.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Roanoke shot 48.4% from the field (30-62) while shooting 8 for 17 from beyond the arc. Where the Maroons did their damage was at the free throw line, going 21 for 27 while Whitworth went six for seven.
  • Over the 40 minutes, Roanoke outrebounded the Pirates 38-28. The Maroon bench outscored Whitworth 35-16.
  • Four players reached double figures led by Marcus Morgan's 18. Draper finished with 16 with Efosa U-Edosomwan and McClary both scoring 12.
  • Morgan's 10 rebounds was also a team-high.

UP NEXT

  • The Maroons will return home next weekend, hosting the Frankie Allen Tip-Off Tournament on November 18 and 19. Roanoke starts off with a game against Alfred on Friday, Nov. 18. The Game with the Saxons gets underway at 6 p.m. at the Cregger Center.
