Roanoke picks up road win over Shenandoah

The Lead: After wrapping up the home portion of their 2020-21 season, the Roanoke field hockey team traveled to Winchester to face Shenandoah on Friday night. Each team would score a first half goal to send the game to the break at a 1-1 tie. The Maroons would score the go ahead goal in the third period and made it hold up as they came away with the 2-1, Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win.

Highlights:

  • Roanoke would enjoy a 5-1 shot advantage in the first period.
  • With just over two minutes left on the clock in the opening frame, Katherine Martin broke the scoreless tie off a feed from Hope Keller.
  • Each team would get one shot off during the second 15 minutes with the Hornets netting the equalizer with a little over six minutes before the half.
  • As time ticked down in the quarter number three, Lauren Heffron scored to break the tie heading into the final period of play.
  • The Hornets would be awarded a pair of penalty corners and attempt three shots but could not score as the Maroons held on for the 2-1 win.
  • Martha Hurley and Emilee Wooten paced the Maroons with three shots while Martin attempted two. In goal Hannah Roerden picked up her fifth win of the season, recording three saves.

Up next: Roanoke will complete their regular season next Friday when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a 3:00pm start.
