The Short Story: The Roanoke College field hockey team scored early in the second half, sending the game with No. 17 Washington and Lee into overtime. The Generals scored just over two and half minutes into the extra period to escape Kerr Stadium with a 2-1 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It took nearly the first half before either team found the back of the goal box when the Generals used a free hit to send a ball in and score at 29:18, giving WLU the 1-0 lead at halftime.
  • At 46:59, Martha Hurley sent a ball into the box that Mary Wisher put by the goalie to tie the score up at 1-1.
  • With the scored tied at the end of regulation, the two teams were sent to overtime, where, including the goalie, play 7-on-7 with a "golden goal" rule.
  • The Generals were able to score 2:32 into the extra period to come away with the 2-1 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • This was the sixth overtime game in the series with the Generals. With the win, WLU has a 4-2 lead in extra period contests.
