The Short Story: The Roanoke College field hockey team scored early in both the first and second quarters en route to a 5-0 win over Southern Virginia to finish up a four-game road trip to start the 2022 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Grace Vernarelli found the back of the goal just 4:12 into the game to give the Maroons an early 1-0 lead. The goal would prove to be the game-winner.
  • Less than three minutes later, Martha Hurley added a goal off a pass from Vernarelli to put Roanoke up 2-0 at 7:06.
  • The Maroons extended their lead with less than a minute left in the first quarter when Vernarelli scored her second goal, this time off a pass from Hope Keller at 14:03.
  • Hurley would score her second goal of the contest just 3:42 into the second quarter off a pass from Krista DeModna to give Roanoke the 4-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • The lone goal of the second half came with just over one minute left in the game by Josephine van Leyen, who intercepted a pass in a crowded box in front of the goal.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Roanoke had a commanding lead in shots over the Knights, 34-2, over the game. It was the defense of the Maroons that kept SVU from taking a single shot in the second half.
  • Only one of the shots by the Knights was on goal, which was saved by Madison Wingerter.
  • Wingerter has won her past two contests in shutout fashion, including the 1-0 win over Wittenberg.
  • The Maroons took at least one penalty corner in each quarter and 18 in total.
