Huntingdon uses seven-run fifth inning to pull away from Guilford

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team used a big fifth inning to spark an 8-0 win over Guilford College on Saturday at Riverwalk Stadium.

The game was one of two played in the Huntingdon Firehouse Classic. Sewanee beat Berea 8-0 in the first game of the day. 

Against Guilford, the Hawks scored seven runs in the fifth inning and earned their second shutout in as many games. After taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, Huntingdon sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth inning. 

An RBI single by Heath Haskins and an RBI double by Garrett Breland opened the fifth-inning scoring before Breland scored on an error to make it a 4-0 game. Danny Coleman Jr. singled in another run before a two-run triple by Chris Fisher made it 7-0. Will Cosby ended the scoring with an RBI single. 

The Hawks finished with 14 hits in the game. Haskins was 4-for-4 with an RBI, a run and two stolen bases and Bradley Harris was 3-for-5 with a run. Fisher finished two RBIs and a run, Coleman had two hits, two runs and an RBI and Colton Clark had two hits and a run. Cosby and Breland each finished with an RBI and a run.

Pitchers Brooks Freeman, John Kelsoe and Tucker Duke combined for seven strikeouts, three walks and nine hits in the shutout. Freeman (1-0) earned the win in six innings, striking out three, walking one and scattering six hits. Kelsoe pitched two innings before Duke pitched the final inning.

Coming Up: Huntingdon returns to action in the Firehouse Classic at Riverwalk Stadium on Sunday. Huntingdon will play Sewanee at 4 p.m. Guilford and Berea will play in the first game of the day at noon.
