The Lead: Roanoke traveled to Lynchburg to face Randolph College on Thursday night. The WildCats took the first two sets before Roanoke rallied to take the third and fourth sets to tie the match at 2-2. In the fifth and decisive set, Roanoke would race out to a 6-2 advantage and never look back as they took the finale 15-6 to complete the 3-2, come from behind, win.

How it Happened:

First Set:

  • The match started with the teams trading the lead. Leading 8-7, Randolph would score five consecutive points to push their lead to 13-7. The Maroons would score only two of the next seven points, both thanks to WildCat service errors, as the Roanoke deficit grew to 18-9.
  • RC would rattle off five straight, including a Parker Moody service and Olivia Newman kill, to force a timeout. Out of the break, another Moody ace and attack errors by Randolph would allow the Maroons to mount a comeback.
  • However, the home team would hold off the Roanoke rally to take the opener, 25-23.

Second Set:

  • Roanoke scored the first two points point of the second set before Randolph answered with two points of their own. The set was tied at 4-4 before the WildCats once again used a big run to open up an advantage. A 6-0 Randolph run was finally stopped by a Linsey Bailey kill, but RC faced a five-point deficit.
  • Raonoke closed the gap but another Randolph surge allowed the WildCats to pull away late for the 25-21 set win and the 2-0 lead.

Third Set:

  • The third set would be another tightly contested affair, but this time it was the Maroons that would use a late run to seize control.
  • Angel Ross recorded a kill, as did Ryanna Clark. A service ace by Newman and a Randolph attack error would allow Roanoke to take a 20-16 advantage and force a timeout.
  • Randolph cut it to 21-19 but a bad set followed by kills from Claire Williams and Moody allowed RC to take the third set, and cut the Randolph lead to 2-1.

Fourth Set:

  • Roanoke used the momentum to start the fourth stanza by taking six of the first eight points.
  • Leading 18-12, Roanoke would take advantage of three WildCat miscues to push their advantage to 21-13 and force another Randolph timeout.
  • After an attack error, the home standing Cats would score six straight to curt the RC lead to 22-19.
  • Bailey registered her 12th kill of the match to stop the run. After a Williams point, Roanoke was on the verge of tying the match and when Bailey put away another at the net, the match would be tied at 2-2.

Fifth Set:

  • Each team would score to start the set. RC used kills by Clark, Williams, and Moody to race out to a 6-2 lead.
  • Another Moody kill and a service ace by Kennedy Clemmer put the Maroons in firm control.
  • A pair of Randolph service errors to go with an ace by Bailey and kill by Logan Pasley would put the Maroons one point away from completing the comeback. Bailey served her third ace of the match and Roanoke had come back from two sets to love to win the five set match.

Highlights:

  • Bailey led the way with 13 kills. Clark had nine kills with Moody adding eight and Williams, seven.
  • Roanoke served up 12 aces, four by Moody and three each for Bailey and Clemmer.
  • Newman had 28 assists to go with her six kills. Clemmer (25) and Bailey (22) led the back line in digs.

Up Next: Roanoke will be back on the road tomorrow when they make the trip to Ashland to face Randolph-Macon.
