The Lead: The third seeded Roanoke field hockey team played host to the #6 seed Randolph-Macon in the quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference(ODAC) Field Hockey Tournament on Tuesday afternoon. It was the second time that the Maroons had hosted the Yellow Jackets this season, picking up a 1-0 win back in March. The game would go into the second half in a scoreless tie. Roanoke scored the first goal of the afternoon midway into the third quarter and the defense did the rest as RC advanced with another 1-0 win over Randolph-Macon.

Highlights:

  • The visitors from Ashland would control much of the first quarter action in the Roanoke zone as RMC enjoyed a 2-1 shot edge after 15 minutes of play.
  • Seven minutes into the second frame, the Maroons got their first good scoring opportunity off a penalty corner. Madison Filson put the ball in play and Martha Hurley put a shot on goal that was saved. Filson gathered the rebound and launched another shot that was kicked aside by the goalie and the game would remain scoreless heading into the half.
  • The Yellow Jackets would still enjoy a shot edge, 7-5 after 30 minutes of play.
  • Roanoke would begin to tilt the field in their favor early in the second half. The first five minutes would see five Maroon shots and another great scoring chance this time by Emilee Wooten and Katherine Martin. However, the back-to-back shots were once again saved by the Jacket's goalie.
  • Three minutes later however, the Maroons would break through. The goalie came out to stop a breakaway and as she tried to recover, Martin would send a pass to the front of the goal and Hurley put in in the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead.
  • Hurley and Martin got three shots off in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to set the tone for Roanoke, as they would allow just one shot over the final 15 minutes on their way to advancing to the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament.
  • Roanoke would finish the game with a 19-8 shot advantage, including 14-1 in the second half.
  • Hannah Roerden finished the game with two saves.

Up next: Roanoke travel to the #2 seed, Washington and Lee on Friday for a rematch with the Generals in the semifinal round of the ODAC Tournament.
