The Lead: The Roanoke College field hockey team hosted Sweet Briar on Friday afternoon. The game would feature a record breaking performance as the Maroons secured a 6-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over the Vixens.

Highlights:

  • Roanoke scored the game's first goal just over five minutes into the opening period. Katherine Martin scored off an assist from Hope Keller, giving Martin goals in consecutive games.
  • Three minutes into the second quarter, Emilee Wooten scored the first of her three goals on the afternoon.
  • After assisting on the Wooten goal, Lauren Heffron would make it 3-0 as Wooten returned the favor adding a helper.
  • With the assist, Wooten tied the Roanoke College Field Hockey record for total points. The record was set at 128 points by Shelbi Holloman '16.
  • Six minutes later, Wooten would claim the record to herself as she scored off a Penalty Corner that was sent to Claudia Roncone, who sent the ball to the waiting stick of Wooten for the goal and the record.
  • Five minutes into the second half Wooten would complete the hat trick off a pass from Martin, giving the Maroons a 5-0 advantage. 1:18 later, Martin would add her second score of the afternoon with Wooten adding another assist.
  • A late third quarter score by the Vixens would spoil the shutout.
  • Hannah Roerden played into the fourth quarter, recording a pair of saves before giving way to Madison Wingerter.

Up next: Roanoke will travel to Bridgewater on Tuesday looking to get the season off to a 3-0 start.
