Women's Lacrosse Falls to Shenandoah, 19-8, in Puerto Rico

BAYAMON, P.R. -- The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team remained unbeaten on the season as the Hornets posted a 19-8 victory over Bridgewater State University on Tuesday morning at Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium in Bayamón, Puerto Rico.

The Hornets improve to 6-0 on the season, while the Bears fall to 1-3.

Senior attack Anne Baxter (Springfield, Pa.) paced Shenandoah with four goals and an assist, while junior midfielder Alyson Bittinger (Westminster, Md.) also found the back of the net four times for the Hornets.

Senior attack Victoria McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) paced Bridgewater State with a game and season-high five goals. McDonough also led all players with eight draw controls.

Leading 3-2 early in the contest, Shenandoah scored the final eight goals of the first half to take a commanding 11-2 advantage into the break. Bittinger potted three goals in the opening stanza, while Baxter and sophomore attack Kathleen Donovan (Centreville, Md.) notched two apiece.

A free position strike by BSU junior midfielder Kelsi Brennan (Dedham, Mass.) followed by back-to-back tallies by McDonough to open the second half cut the deficit to 11-5. Baxter and sophomore attack Emma Stiffler (New Freedom, Pa.) answered for the Hornets before McDonough scored off the free position to make it a 13-6 game with just over 20 minutes remaining.

The Bears, however, would not score again until the waning minutes of the contest as the Hornets reeled off six straight goals, including a pair from sophomore midfielder Natalie Nichols (Montpelier, Va.), to pull ahead 19-6 and put the game well out of reach.

Goals by McDonough, off the free position, and junior midfielder Emily Hiller (Marion. Mass.) in the closing minutes accounted for the final score of 19-8.

Shenandoah finished with a 34-18 shot advantage for the game as well as a 16-11 edge in draw controls. The Hornets went 17-for-20 in clear attempts, while the Bears converted 12 of 20 clears including just 6-for-12 in the first half.

Freshman netminders Ashley MacFarlane (Conowingo, Md.) and Lauren Standish (Hughesville, Md.) split the game between the pipes for the Hornets as they each made two saves with MacFarlane picking up her fifth win of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Hayley Barner (Westwood, Mass.) turned aside ten shots for the Bears, while freshman Olivia Kerrigan (Braintree, Mass.) came on in relief of Barner with 21:35 left to play and stopped three shots.

Bridgewater State is back in action on Wednesday morning (10:00 AM) as the Bears take on Susquehanna University at Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium.
