UMW Softball Drops Friday Doubleheader to Bridgewater

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Bridgewater College on Friday afternoon at the Battleground. UMW fell in the opener, 5-1, before dropping the nightcap, 11-2, and slip to 7-8 on the season.

In the opener, Bridgewater scored single runs in the first and second innings, before the Eagles cut the margin in half with a run in the fourthon a home run from sophomore Emma Schieda. The visitors added three in the fifth for the final score.

In addition to Schieda's homer, Maggie Mrowka, Grace Drury, and Logan Gibson all collected singles for UMW. Caitlyn Burch dropped just her second contest of the year, allowing five runs on eight hits in seven innings, with two walks and four strikeouts.

In game two, UMW jumped ahead with two runs in the first. Schieda continued to wield a hot bat, connecting for another solo home run, and Caroline Bird followed with a single. Bridget Laychak singled to center, and Bird came all the way around from first to score on a throwing error. Bridgewater scored once in the second and two more in the fifth to take the lead, and added five in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Freshman Taylor Hudson took the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of relief. She walked four and struck out three.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they visit Averett University at 2:00 p.m.
