The Lead: The Roanoke College women's basketball team hosted Ferrum on Tuesday night with the winner going on to the championship game of the 2021 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Basketball Tournament. Roanoke had just defeated the Panthers on February 22nd and thanks to a 32-6 second quarter, the Maroons punched their ticket to their first ODAC finals appearance since 2011.

How it Happened:

  • Roanoke scored first but it would be Ferrum with the 6-5 advantage at the mid-way point of the opening quarter.
  • The Panthers added a hoop before Ayanna Scarborough scored and JaBryah Haverkamp gave the Maroons the lead.
  • Whitney Hopson and Renee Alquiza added three-pointers and the Maroons had a 16-10 edge after one.
  • During the second 10 minutes, Roanoke all but punched their ticket to the finals with a quarter that saw them shoot 71.4% from the field (15-21) to take a 48-16 lead into the half.
  • In the end, the Maroons would cruise to a 30 point win by shooting 46.8% and enjoying a 48-27 edge on the boards.
  • Alquiza paced a quartet of players in double figures with 13. Kristina Harrel added 12 with Hopson and Haverkamp scoring 11. In all, 11 different players scored.

Up next: Roanoke will look to win their 14th ODAC Championship, and first since 2000, when they travel to Lynchburg for a rematch with the Hornets. Roanoke fell to Lynchburg in overtime, 63-57, on February 24th. The Championship game is scheduled to tip at 4pm on Thursday, March 11th.
