The Lead: The Roanoke baseball team made the trip to face Hampden-Sydney on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons went searching for their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win of the season after falling to Lynchburg last weekend. Roanoke scored early and held a 5-3 edge. However, the Tigers closed the game with six straight runs to win the opener 9-5. In game two, Roanoke took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth only to see the Tigers rally to tie the game and then win it one inning later, as the Maroons fell 4-3.

Highlights:

  • Will Smith led off the afternoon by being hit by a pitch and would advance on a Conner Butler single through the left side. A Mason Staz walk would load the bases for Jonny Wall. Wall delivered a 2-RBI single to left to put Roanoke in front 2-0.
  • The lead would be short-lived as HSC scored three times in the bottom of the first.
  • Butler doubled to plate Smith and the game was tied. An inning later, Wall doubled and advanced on a ground out. PK Cocolis got a bunt down to score Wall on a sacrifice and the Maroons were back in front.
  • The lead grew to 5-3 in the top of the sixth with a Jacob Bonzon solo home run.
  • The Tigers scored runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to tie the game at 5-5. A four-run eighth inning would be too much to overcome as Roanoke fell, 9-5, in the opening game.
  • Butler was 3-4 with a run and an RBI while Wall finished 2-4 with a run and two runs batted in. Will Turner received the start and went six innings, giving up just one earned run on six hits. Brandon Hill and Anthony Sullivan got the game into the eighth but the bullpen couldn't close it out for RC.
