Gammons, Cosentino Claim Singles Victories Versus Hollins

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –
Alyson Gammons and Alyssa Cosentino were responsible for a pair of singles wins, but it was Hollins that earned the team victory (7-2) when the two teams collided in Winston-Salem, N.C., at the Bert Lain Tennis Center on Saturday, February 26th.

Hollins earned a default in the first doubles clash with Emily Jones and Amanda Dobert earning the victory. The No. 1 pair of Krishna Agrawal and Amelia Shaw extended the Hollins lead to 2-0 with an 8-0 decision over Haley Gilley and McKinley Rice. Anna Vreelin and Hannah Miller followed with an 8-1 triumph versus the Salem tandem of Cosentino and Zakeria Pomeroy, resulting in the Hollins sweep.

Agrawal claimed her second point of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Gilley when the two met in No. 1 singles. Shaw was also successful in picking up a second point, defeating Rice in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 10-5) in No. 2 singles.

Cosentino came through with the first point of the match for the Spirits, working past Miller in three sets by scores of 6-1, 2-6, 10-6 in a meeting of No. 3 seeds. Vreelin answered with a pair of 6-1, 6-1 wins over Pomeroy.

Gammons, making her collegiate tennis debut, battled to a three-set victory over Emily Jones in No. 5 singles. Gammons rebounded from an opening set, 6-4 loss, to earn the win by scores of 6-0, 10-5.

Salem will stay in the Twin Cities for is next two matches, facing NCAA Division II Winston-Salem State on March 3rd. That will be followed by a March 14th match, also against the Rams, which will take place at Salem.
