Season Opening Win For Maroons

The Lead: The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team got the 2021 season started on Saturday afternoon with a visit from Virginia Wesleyan. The Maroons would score 13 unanswered goals to start the match as they defeated the Marlins in a non-conference matchup.

How it Happened:

  • The Maroons got the scoring started early when Lilly Blair took a pass from Maddie Stopkoski for the first goal of the season.
  • Roanoke would win the next three draws, 14 of 18 on the afternoon, leading to a trio of goals by Emerson Foster.
  • Molly Kasemeyer would net a free position shot before Blair set up another Foster score to make in 6-0 after just 10 minutes of play.
  • RC would control most of the action in a first half that saw the Maroons enjoy 28-0 advantage in shots.
  • The second half would see the Marlins get in the scoring column right out of the break. The momentum would go right back to the side of the home team with a Blair free position before adding a goal when up a player.
  • Shots would be 20-3 in the second half and when Kate Loughran converted anther free position shot, the Maroons had opened 2021 with a 19-1 win.
  • Foster paced the Maroon offense with six goals and an assist with Blair adding four scores and a helper. Kasemeyer would join Riley Chase and Ellie Armstrong with two goals apiece. Roanoke would cause 13 VWU turnovers while picking up 43 ground balls. Carly Schoudel got the start in net, picking up the win.

Up Next: Roanoke will defend their home turf at Kerr stadium again next Saturday when they play host to Christopher Newport at 1:00pm.
