UMW Softball Drops Friday Doubleheader at Shenandoah

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Shenandoah University on Friday evening in Winchester, Va. The Eagles dropped game one, 5-4, in eight innings, before falling in the second, 8-2, and slip to 16-15 on the season.

In the first game, UMW scored first in the third inning on a Hannah Steele RBI single, and another in the fourth on an Emma Dickson RBI double. The Hornets tied the score with two runs in the sixth. The Eagles went back ahead in the seventh, as Dickson scored on a Caroline Bird RBI groundout, but Shenandoah tied the score in the bottom of the seventh. 

UMW scored in the top of the eighth on an RBI single from Grace Drury, but the Hornets scored twice in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

Dickson singled and doubled, and Steele and Drury each had two hits for UMW. Caitlyn Burch took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits in 7.2 innings, with two walks and three strikeouts.

In game two, Shenandoah scored two in the first and two in the second to pull away early. The Eagles scored two in the fifth to pull to within 4-2, as Nya Lloyd doubled home one run, and scored on a wild pitch. The Hornets plated four in the fifth.

In addition to Lloyd's double, Bird added a walk and a single. Stephanie Folkner took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 1.1 innings, with no walks or strikeouts.

Mary Washington will visit Lynchburg University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for a doubleheader.
