Three Score in Double Figures on New Year’s Eve

BREVARD, N.C. - Three Tornados scored in double figures, but the Brevard College men's basketball team (2-7) fell in a non-conference contest to Ferrum College (5-6), 79-66 on New Year's Eve at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

LB Boyette led all Tornado scorers with 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field with two 3-pointers and six made free throws. Quincy Carter added 14 points, also on 4-of-8 shooting, with a pair of 3-pointers and a 4-for-4 mark from the free-throw line. Charles Reed posted the second double-figure scoring total of his career with 12 points while also snatching a team-best seven rebounds.

Ferrum outmatched BC from the field, hitting at a 45% mark to Brevard's 38.5%. The Panthers also shot 35% from long distance and made 24 free throws to Brevard's 21. Ferrum was able to dominate the glass with a 38-24 rebounding advantage in addition to scoring 40 points off the bench, while BC scored 16 points off Ferrum turnovers and had 10 points in transition.

The contest featured three total lead changes as both sides held double-digit advantages in the game.

Brevard was able to hold the lead for the first 19 minutes of action, kicking off the game on an 8-2 scoring run before taking a 14-7 lead with 13:37 left in the first half. The Tornados then used a 10-2 scoring run to take their biggest lead of the night, 24-12. Ferrum battled back, using a 13-4 stretch to cut the lead to one point, 28-27, with 2:06 left in the first half. The Panthers hit a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left to take the lead into the locker rooms, 34-32.

Brevard was able to keep the deficit within single digits, pulling to within three points, 52-49, at the 11:54 mark. Ferrum extended its lead to a 10-point margin, 59-49, with a quick 7-0 run. The Panthers kept Brevard at bay for the rest of the matchup, claiming the non-conference win 79-66.

The Tornados return to action next Tuesday with a USA South Conference road matchup vs. Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee at  5 p.m.
