NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University got a double-double from Brian Herrmann, including a career-high 14 rebounds, as the junior forward lifted the Captains (14-7) past Roanoke College (8-13) in non-conference men's hoops today, 86-78. Conley Taylor added 32 points and rookie Tra Benefield had 22 as Christopher Newport held off a second-half rally from the Maroons.

CNU bounced back for their 10th home win after dropping two straight in the Freeman Center. The Captains led by as many as 10, as Herrmann knocked down a three-pointer on the first possession of the half. Roanoke slowly chipped away at the Captains lead, completing the comeback just over ten minutes into the half. Clay Lacy knocked down a long three from the corner to tie the game at 61 with 9:28 remaining.

Christopher Newport answered, though, powered by tremendous rebounding from Herrmann. The Captains junior grabbed seven rebounds and had six points in the final eight minutes, leading CNU to the eight-point win.

The Captains weathered the storm of Roanoke's top big man, Logan Singleton. Singleton was sensational, scoring 32 points and grabbing 16 rebounds with four blocks. The Captains, though, would hold the rest of the Roanoke squad to just 17 buckets in 59 attempts (28.8% shooting).

Christopher Newport's leading scorer, Conley Taylor, scored 20 of his 32 points in the first half; he added six assists and four rebounds in the game. Benefield had 22 points and nine rebounds, falling just shy of a double-double. Herrmann's 14 rebounds were paired with 19 points with a couple of big three-pointers. Senior Matt Preston rounded out the top performances for the Captains, grabbing nine rebounds and swatting four shots in the contest.

Singleton's double-double was tops for Roanoke, though he was joined in double-figure scoring by Melvin Felix, with 16. Jack Hamilton added seven points while rebounding 12 and adding three blocks.

The Captains return to conference action next weekend, as CNU travels to Averett and Ferrum for a tough road swing. Both games will be at 4:00 pm, with CNU taking on the Averett Cougars on Saturday, February 12 and the Ferrum Panthers on Sunday, February 13.
