Roanoke Falls To #7 Lynchburg

The Lead: Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play got started for Roanoke on Sunday when they made the trip east to Lynchburg to battle the #7 ranked Hornets. Lynchburg scored first but Roanoke rallied to make it 3-4 heading into the seventh inning. The Hornets would add three more runs on the way to taking game one, 7-3.  In game two, a five-run fourth inning would propel the national ranked Hornets to a 6-2 victory.

Highlights:

  • After Lynchburg took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, the Maroons answered with a run in the next half inning. Jonny Wall singled and advanced to third on a Mason Staz double. Conner Butler singled to make it 2-1.
  • Staz singled in the top of the sixth. With two-outs, Owen Lawn tripled to the deepest part of the park to plate Staz and come home on a Carson McCusker base hit to close the deficit to 4-3.
  • Roanoke would get no closer as the Hornets added three runs to close out game one with a 7-3 ODAC victory.
  • Chris Dudley got the start and went four innings, giving up three runs on five hits with five punch outs. The Maroons bullpen was unable to keep the Hornets off the board, giving up four runs on six hits.
  • Staz went 3-4 with a run and Lawn finished 2-4 with a run and an RBI. Butler had an RBI and a stolen base.

Highlights:

  • After firing a one-hitter in his last outing, Will Turner got the start in game two and shut down the Lynchburg bats through three innings of work. However, the Hornets would get to the Roanoke starter and into the bullpen in a five-run bottom of the fourth.
  • Trailing 6-0, Roanoke would start to mount a rally in the top of the eighth. Jacob Bonzon sent a base hit through the right side and then stole second. With two outs, Will Smith reached on a Hornet miscue to send Bonzon across the plate. Smith scored on a Butler double and Staz reached on another Lynchburg error. The rally would end there on a fly out to center and Roanoke would see the Hornets earn the sweep with a 6-2 win.
  • Smith, Butler, Lawn, and Bonzon would be the only Maroons to reach via a hit with Staz drawing a walk.
