The Basics
Score: Roanoke 77 | Randolph-Macon 69
Records: Maroons 12-4, 7-2 | Yellow Jackets 6-8, 5-4
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke traveled to Ashland to face a Randolph-Macon team that they beat earlier, 69-68, in the Cregger Center. The Maroons built a double-digit lead and hit nine of 11 free throws down the stretch to seal the ODAC win.

How it Happened:

  • Kelly Williams and Michal Ross scored five straight as Macon opened the game with a 5-0 lead.
  • Kristina Harrel hit a pair of free throws to stop the run as Roanoke began to get into a rhythm. After an Ayanna Scarborough layup, RC had completed the comeback to take their first lead of the afternoon, 8-7.
  • Over the final five minutes of the first quarter, the lead would change hands six times before a Corinne McPadden, buzzer beating, layup would give the Maroons an 18-17 advantage.
  • Mid-way through the second stanza, Harrel would push the Roanoke lead to five, 26-21, their largest of the first half. However, the Yellow Jackets would score six of the final eight to once again make it a one point game at the half, 28-27.
  • The two, long time, ODAC rivals would trade the lead back and forth over the first half of the third period. Scarborough would knot the score at 38-38 at the 5:17 mark.
  • With less than two minutes on the clock, Kayla Kinsler would push the RC advantage to six, a lead they would enjoy going into the final quarter of play.
  • Ajah Alexander would start the final frame with a hoop and after another Harrel tally, the Maroon's lead would grow to 14 in just the first minute and a half of play.
  • Ross scored three straight and then a three ball by Cheridan Hatfield cut the RC edge to 10, 60-50, with just over five minutes left in the game.
  • Five more Yellow Jacket points trimmed the gap to five. Alexander and Harrel would allow the road team to extend the lead but Becca Arrington cut the RMC deficit to just four, 64-60, with three minutes left to play.
  • Roanoke took care of business from the free throw line as Kinsler, Harrel, and Whitney Hopson combined to make nine of their 11 free throw attempts allowing RC to pull away for their second win over the Yellow Jackets this season.
  • Harrel tied for game high honors with 18 points while Kinlser added 17. The two combined to go 17-17 from the stripe. Scarborough led with five rebounds with Hopson handing out nine assists and Sayre Brandstatter picking up three steals.

Up next: The win sets up a first place showdown in Lexington on Tuesday night. Roanoke will travel to face Washington and Lee with the top spot in the ODAC on the line.
